On Thursday, Oct. 20, Tufts University Police Department donated a number of bicycles to Bikes Not Bombs, an organization based out of Jamaica Plain aimed at providing bikes to Black and other marginalized people in Boston and the Global South.
As part of Bike Registration, Tufts students are required to register their bikes with TUPD to keep them on campus. But every year, bikes are forgotten, abandoned, or simply never claimed. In partnership with Bikes Not Bombs, those bicycles were loaded for transportation to be repaired and repurposed for people across the globe.
The bikes acquire by Bikes Not Bombs are repaired by volunteers to ensure that they are safe to ride and in good condition. Each Wednesday, volunteer nights are held in Jamaica Plain from 6-9 PM, and Volunteer Apprentices can assist with key operations both in administrative offices and the Bike Shop & Training Center.
