Spring 2026 Public Safety Update
As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and open communication, I want to take a moment to share that the Department of Public Safety remains keenly aware of the concerns being voiced across higher education and within our own community. Please know that every day, our team is working with care and dedication to protect and support everyone who lives, learns, and works at Tufts.
The most effective safety efforts are grounded in partnership. To that end, we continue to strengthen our relationships with our municipal and state partners so that, should a joint response ever be needed, it will be timely, well‑coordinated, and effective. Just as importantly, we rely on you––the eyes and ears of this community. If you see or experience something that feels concerning, please say something. Your awareness and willingness to speak up truly make a difference.
Safety is a shared responsibility, and together we can continue to build a community where everyone feels protected, supported, and heard. Thank you for your partnership and trust.
Please read on to learn more about what’s new in Public Safety since our last update.
Warm regards,
Yolanda Smith
Chief of Police and Associate Vice President of Public Safety
Meeting Our Goals
Accreditation: In January, TUPD began the state reaccreditation process. While voluntary, it reflects a department’s commitment to excellence and accountability and demonstrates dedication to meeting and maintaining the high professional standards set by the policing community. We will receive our verdict in the coming months.
Training: TUPD continues to prioritize the safety and preparedness of our campus community through ongoing, high-level training. In response to recent incidents across the country, including the active threat event at Brown University, we've provided comprehensive training for all officers, focusing on rapid response, coordinated decision-making, and effective communication in high-stress, evolving situations. Our team has completed a modified version of the ALERRT Level One training, as well as Introduction to Active Shooter Response Tactics training.
Additional training will be conducted during the summer.
Happening Now and Coming Soon
Autism Awareness Month Patches: Throughout April, TUPD is raising money for autism awareness and support through the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation. Donations of $10 or more will receive an official TUPD Autism Awareness Patch.
Bicycle Registration and Removal: Tufts Police offers free bicycle registration in case of theft or lost property. Starting May 22, all unregistered bicycles left on campus will be subject to removal. Register your bike today!
Civilian Response to Active Shooter Training: The Office of Emergency Management hosted several sessions that provided tools and techniques for responding to an active shooter/threat. More sessions will be offered in the fall on the OEM website.
New Cummings School Police Station: The TUPD station on the Grafton campus is now located in the Loew Veterinary Medical Education Center basement. All TUPD station locations.
