Fall 2025 Public Safety Update
Since 2022, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) has been working continuously to learn, change, and adapt to the needs of all four Tufts campuses, following the recommendations of a year-long study by the Working Group on TUPD Arming. While we continuously strive for improvement, our unwavering commitment remains: to uphold the safety, well-being, and dignity of every member of our community. To support this effort, we plan to conduct another university-wide climate survey in the coming year to reassess public safety needs and concerns. We strongly encourage everyone to participate so that every voice is heard.
Meeting Our Goals
Campus Security: We have successfully deployed campus security officers (CSOs) at the Joyce Cummings Center, Ballou Hall, and Tisch Sports Center on the Medford/Somerville campus, marking a significant step toward establishing a fully in-house security model in the near future.
Training: While training is consistently offered throughout the year, we'd like to highlight a few initiatives that strongly support the ongoing work within DPS. Several DPS staff members have completed COBWEB (Cops On Bicycles With Education for Bicyclists) training as part of efforts to establish a bicycle unit at Tufts. Additionally, TUPD has sent officers to the 2025 Restorative Justice Conference held by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), and DPS hosted SRR Training for our community partners, to help advance law enforcement training using innovative and mindful approaches.
Now and Coming Soon
Pink Patch Project: Throughout October, TUPD is raising money for cancer research and patient support. Donations of $15 or more will receive an official 2025 TUPD pink patch.
Comfort Dogs: Both Pepper and Hayley are available for events by request through the Comfort Dog Request Form. We strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique mental health resource to lift spirits and support your team, department, or organization.
Toys for Tots: DPS will once again host its annual toy drive to provide gifts for children in need this holiday season. Donations will begin next month—stay tuned for more details.
CPR/AED Training: The Office of Emergency Management is hosting free training over the next two months. Reserve your spot while space is still available.
