Residential Housing Fire Safety Tips

  • NO open flames are allowed inside any Tufts University building.
  • Fabric furnishings that do not comply with the Tufts fire retardant policy. Couches, chairs, futons, mattresses that do not have a tag affixed that states the item is CAL TB 133 compliant are prohibited from being used in all Tufts University buildings.
  • Halogen torchiere lamps and multi-head “octopus” style floor and desk lamps are prohibited from being used in all Tufts University buildings.
  • Improper/careless disposal of smoking materials.  Smoking is prohibited inside all Tufts University buildings. This includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes and hookahs. Smoke only at outside designated areas and make sure smoking materials are fully extinguished.
  • Unattended cooking, watch what you heat.  Always remain close to all cooking processes. “Stand by your pan”.  Unplug electric appliances when not in use. If a fire occurs in a microwave oven, keep the door closed and unplug the unit. Do not try to remove burning containers from a microwave.
  • Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors are life saving devices that will give you an early warning to a potential life threatening incident.  These devices are a vital part of the building Fire Alarm System.  Any tampering, covering, disconnecting, or obstructing of these devices is enforceable by Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148, section 39 and is punishable by imprisonment and a fine.
  • Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems are installed in all of the University’s student residential housing.  The systems are maintained, inspected and tested on a quarterly schedule in accordance with NFPA 25 standards.  All of the resident’s rooms, common areas, storage, utility and attic spaces are protected by sprinkler heads, that when activated, will control the spread of the fire.  A sprinkler head will activate when the temperature at the head reaches 155° initiating the flow of water.  Only that head which has activated will flow water.  Additional heads will only activate when the temperature reaches 155°.   Obstructions to the sprinkler heads such as tapestry or cloth type items attached to the ceiling are prohibited.  Nothing is allowed to be hung from the sprinkler head or the sprinkler piping
