Prevent fire incidents from happening to you by taking precautions to avoid the following:

  • Unattended/careless use of candles. Never leave candles burning unattended.  Keep candles inside a one foot circle of safety, free from decorations and other combustibles.
  • Combustible materials too close to a heat source.  Clothing and furnishings must not be placed closer than 3 feet from any portable space heater.  Oil filled, radiated space heaters are the safest to use.
  • Unattended cooking.  Cooking equipment is involved in over 100,000 home fires each year. Stay in the kitchen when you are grilling, frying or broiling food.  Watch what you heat.
  • Improper/careless disposal of smoking materials.  If you must smoke, smoke outside and make sure smoking materials are fully extinguished and disposed of in a metal container.
