The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the US Department of Labor enacted the Occupational Exposure to Chemicals in Laboratory Standard (1910.1450) in 1990. The requirements of this standard apply to all employees engaged in the laboratory use of hazardous chemicals at Tufts University. The primary requirement of the standard is the formulation and implementation of the Tufts Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) and the development of written Safety Plans for high hazard chemicals. This CHP includes work practices, procedures and policies to ensure that employees are protected from the adverse effects of all potentially hazardous chemicals.
Review and alterations of the CHP are made as needed, but no less than annually.
In this document laboratory includes support rooms, equipment rooms and shops used to support laboratory activities.
