Summary of Comments and Public Safety's Response
- The door from the main lobby to the lower 100's sometimes does not unlock.
- A significant number of survey respondents made a comment specifically about this door, or a general comment about a door that beeps but does not completely unlock. Aside from the malfunctioning door, these responses indicated that problems with the system were not being reported.
- In response to early survey comments, the JumboFob system vendor was called to service this door. A repair was effected on Wednesday, March 6, 2002.
- A new online JumboFob problem reporting page was created to facilitate the rapid reporting of problems with the JumboFob system.
- JumboFobs fail for no apparent reason.
- Fobs have failed, with no outwardly apparent damage, and no indications of abuse. We are working with the fob manufacturer to try to improve reliability of the fob device. To ameliorate the current situation we continue to offer free replacements for non-functional fobs 24 hours a day at the University Police station.
- The JumboFob system didn't work during a power outage at the beginning of the fall semester.
- Since that event additional JumboFob doors were connected to the building's emergency generator system. These doors will be tested during campus-wide power grid maintenance in May after students move out.
- Lower the reader so one can leave their keys in their pocket and "hip-check" the reader to unlock the door.
- The readers are all placed at approximately door knob height. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) stipulates that similar devices, such as fire pull stations and light switches, be placed between 36" and 45" from the floor. Though not technically bound to do so, we have elected to follow this standard as a guideline for placement of the JumboFob readers.
- Why are the basement doors locked? The Powderhouse Boulevard door should also be accessible by JumboFob.
- These two comments deal with general residence hall physical security, and not specifically with the JumboFob system.
- The basement doors are locked due to the dual purpose nature of South Hall. During business hours the front doors are unlocked to permit non-residents access to the Residential Life office. Because it is possible to access the basement from the lobby, the basement stairwell doors remain locked, keeping the residential area of the building secure.
- With regard to the Powderhouse Boulevard entrance, it is the practice of the university to consider safety, security and practicality in designating building entrances. With these factors in mind, the doors currently equipped with JumboFob were chosen for resident access.
- Several misconceptions became apparent in some comments, which bear correcting.
-
- The cost for replacing a lost JumboFob, $10, is the same as the cost to replace a front door key in all other residence halls.
- Policy stipulates that a room lock must be changed when a resident's keys are lost. The cost to change the lock and replace the keys is $55 and is the same in all residence halls.
- During the daytime on weekdays locked-out students must walk to Residential Facilities at 520 Boston Avenue to pickup a spare set of keys. However, if a student is not properly attired or is otherwise incapable of walking to Residential Facilities, a police officer will let you back into your room. In the later case you will be billed $10 on your Bursar account each and every time you request this service.
